What is an Authorized Representative?

If you are applying for or are enrolled in Michigan's Food Assistance Program (FAP), you can choose someone you trust to shop for your groceries and pay for them using your FAP benefits.

The person who you choose to buy your groceries using your FAP benefits is known as your Authorized Representative.

You can choose an Authorized Representative by including his or her name on the Food Assistance Program Application, or by contacting your Family Independence Agency specialist at your local Family Independence Agency office.

Who can be an Authorized Representative?
There are no age restrictions.  Pick someone you trust, from the following list:

  • Family Members
  • Trusted Friends and Neighbors
  • Service Providers (Social Workers, Chore Helpers, etc.)

Why choose someone as an Authorized Representative?
You may want someone to shop for you if:

  • You have difficulty getting transportation to the store.
  • You do not shop frequently.
  • You have physical conditions that make shopping difficult.

What happens when I select an Authorized Representative?
If you are eligible for the Food Assistance Program (FAP), TWO Bridge Cards will be mailed to your current address.  One card is for you and the second card is for your Authorized Representative.

Bridge Cards for Authorized Representatives will have your name AND the Authorized Representative's name printed on it.  The letters "ARFS" will be printed after the Authorized Representative's name (which stands for Authroized Representatives Food Stamps).  You may give this card to your Authorized Representative to keep or you may give this card to your Authorized Representative when he or she is make a trip to the store to buy your groceries.

You will also be mailed two Personal Identification Numbers (PINs): one for your Bridge Card and one for your Authorized Representative's Bridge Card.

With this card, your Authorized Representative will be able to pay for food using your Food Assistance Program benefits.

Word of Caution:
Lost or stolen Bridge Cards will not be replaced.

Also, if your Authorized Representative performs fraudulent activity involving your account, it may result in criminal charges against you and your Authorized Representative, and the benefits may be reduced or stopped completely.

You may cancel your Authorized Representative's Bridge Card at any time by calling the Customer Service Hotline number at 1-888-678-8914.
