How Do I Spend Benefits?

Once you are enrolled in the Food Assistance Program, a benefit account will be created in your name (similar to a bank account).  You benefits will be deposited monthly into this account.

Getting your Bridge Card:
You will need two items to spend your benefits:

  1. The Michigan Bridge Card
  2. A Personal Identification Number (PIN)

Once you are determined eligible for benefits, your Michigan Bridge Card will be mailed to you.  The Bride Card is an orange, plastic card that will have your name and account number printed on the front.

A few days after you receive your Bridge Card, a 4-digit Personal Identification Number (PIN) will be mailed to you.  This number is used with your Bridge Card to spend benefits.  You should keep this number secret and memorize it!

At the Grocery Store:
At the grocery store, the cashier will total your items.  Swipe your Bridge Card though the Point-of-Sale (POS) Terminal.  If you need assistance with this, ask the cashier for help.

After you swipe the card, type in your Personal Identification Number (PIN) using the keypad provided.  The machine then reads your account number and PIN to verify your account information.  If you enter the wrong PIN, the transaction will not work and you'll need to try again.  Once the correct PIN has been entered, benefits will be taken out of your account to pay for the items selected.

Once your purchase is complete, the cashier will give you a receipt.  Your new benefit account balance will be printed at the bottom of this receipt.  If you have questions during any of this process, please ask the cashier for assistance.

You can spend your benefits every day of the week, including holidays and weekends.  Your balance at the end of the month is carried over to the next month.  You will not lose benefits that you do not use.

Word of Caution:
If you benefits are not used for three consecutive calendar months, then your benefits will be frozen, meaning no longer usable.  If this happens, you must contact your local Family Independence Agency office to re-activate your account before you can use your benefits again.

Benefits unused for one year will be returned to the state.
